As a woman in my mid 40′s, breast cancer is a health issue that we are made aware of by doctors, magazines, newspapers, talk shows and by family members or friends who are being diagnosed with it. For my doctors it always seems to be of even greater concern because I was adopted as a baby and have no idea if breast cancer runs along my genetic lines. Breast Cancer touches all of our lives one way or another whether it be a friend, family member or co-worker that we know. Currently I have an aunt and a co-worker fighting this horrible parasite that has invaded their bodies.
Some Facts About Breast Cancer:
- Excluding Skin Cancer, Breast Cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women.
- During 2002-2006, 95% of new cases and 97% of breast cancer deaths occurred in women aged 40 and older.
- White women have a higher incidence of breast cancer than African American women beginning at age 45. In contrast, African American women have a higher incidence rate before age 45 and are more likely to die from breast cancer at every age.
So what can You do? Educate yourself, Talk to your Doctor, Get regular check ups and go for the Mammograms when they are recommended and do the recommended self breast tests. If you don’t know how to do it – ask your doctor as they will be more than happy to instruct you on the proper procedure.
